The Muslim and the Date-Palm Tree

Narrated ibn Omar (radiyAllahu anhu):

The Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wasallam) said, “Amongst the trees, there is a tree, the leaves of which do not fall and is like a Muslim.  Tell me the name of that tree.”  Everybody started thinking about the trees of the desert areas.  And I thought of the date-palm tree but felt too shy to answer.  The others then asked, “What is that tree, O Allah’s Apostle?”  He replied, “It is the date-palm tree.”

Sahih Bukhari, Book of Knowledge, Hadith #58

In a recent course with Sheikh Ibrahim Dremali, where he taught ‘The Fiqh of Hadith’, he discussed various points relating to this beautiful hadith that I want to share:

1.  The leaves of the date-palm tree which do not fall all year round, were compared to the Muslim by the Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wasallam).  This means that the Muslim will bring benefit at all times, whereever they are and at any given time.

2. The Sheikh brought up the benefits of the date-palm tree itself, and how every single part of the tree has benefit, from the roots to the leaves to the dates.  Subhan’Allah.  By using the Prophet’s comparison of a Muslim to this tree, the Sheikh reminds us of all the potential benefits of a Muslim, and how we should never give up in any matter.  Whether it is in making dawah, facing hardship, dealing with family, fellow Muslims, problems in the Masjid, or any other matter – DONT EVER GIVE UP.

This was an excellent reminder extracted from the beautiful words and comparison by our Prophet (sallAllahu alayhi wasallam).  May Allah SWT preserve the Sheikh and help us all to spread the benefit of Islam; Ameen.

  2. My name is Kimberly and I am Catholic. I have a question and I invite anyone and everyone to please write to me via email with any comments or answers as I am VERY confused. I am very confused about Islam/Muslims, or at least some of them. I am 44 yrs old, divorced 6 yrs ago with 3 daughters. For some reason, Arabic/Muslim men have always amazed me. (I do not know why) So when I prayed to God/Allah to actually meet one in person, I was shocked when it happened and within 2 weeks time! In my town there are mostly white, some black people, but in all my years I have NEVER met an Arabic person, ever. I’ve always believed in the power of prayer. If it is God’s will, then his will will be done, whatever that is. Needless to say, I was standing outside on my balcony at 11pm and noticed a very handsome man carrying a box into my downstairs neighbors apartment. Our eyes met and long story short, Taha and I became a couple shortly afterwards. Through him, I met several others. When Taha and I broke up, one of his single friends, Mohammed and I became close. I learned quite a bit from Mohammed about Islam and his culture. I am curious about a lot of things regarding the customs and religion and family life. He is a very gentle man. He is giving, generous and quiet. VERY religious!! We would sometimes read the Qur’an together. He told me several times that Islam is for peace. That it promotes giving to others and helping each other especially in their time of need. Respect of others. If all this is true, then WHY in the world am I reading in the paper that there are Muslims in other non-Muslim countries such as France and England who are trying to take it over? Convert every person they can find and if they do not convert over then either kill or hurt them?? This is what Mohammed the believed prophet did. This is NOT the nice, respectful, peaceful religion that my friend told me about!!!!!!! I am confused and I need clarity from someone who is Muslim, please. My email is
